Remember when ATMs were first introduced (if you are old enough to remember that)?
The banks announced how wonderful they were and how we can use a simple card to get cash out of a wall. And it didn’t cost a thing to do.
Then as we got addicted to and used to using them, they introduced a small fee per transaction.
We grumbled and complained but still used them as it was convenient for us.
Then they increased the fees again.
Now as we move towards much less real cash in the economy, it’s hard to find an ATM machine. Our habits have changed, and the banks take full advantage of that. Because we now put more things on credit cards, they make even more money.
CaChing!!
Social media has had a similar evolution.
At first, it was this great thing to allow us to connect and keep up with our friends’ lives.
Then they introduced business pages and we could build massive communities of fans and talk to them all the time. Our posts were seen by all and they cost nothing to use. It was like a magical kingdom. Imagine being able to promote your business for FREE all over the world – wow this is amazing right?
Then organic reach started to drop.
Then they introduced more paid options. And organic reach dropped again.
Now we have to work much harder to get much less impact (and let’s not even start on how to beat the unbeatable algorithms).
It is now a pay-to-play platform. So now they have you addicted to using it and you spend 80% of your marketing efforts and give way too much headspace to trying to ‘work it out.’
But you are hooked!
Just like that ATM machine got you hooked with the promise of easy, accessible cash.
Think about it! 🤔
Now think about how your time would be better spent on marketing tactics that you own, control, are free, and get better engagement than Facebook on a bad day.
It is not some pie-in-the-sky notion that says you have to post 5 times a day in this way, at this time, standing on your head while eating ice cream. Then MAYBE, you might get some traction. (You know what I mean?)
I am talking about replacing Facebook and Insta with practical, simple marketing that makes sense, that works and heck you might even enjoy doing it (rather than it feeling like a chore).
It is time to flip the switch and take back control. Facebook & Instagram are typically the worst-performing channels for B2B service-based businesses – think about how much money & time you have invested into posts that no one sees. (or maybe not, as that will be a bit depressing)
Here is a very simple exercise to help you work out if you need to dump it:
- How many people are seeing your posts?
- How much time does it take to create and share those posts?
- Have those Insta or Facebook posts generated any enquiries or questions about your service in the last 3-6 months?
If the answers are very few, too long, and no, then you know it’s time to find a better way that doesn’t suck your time and that actually works. No more ATMs for you!
